How to use Tessy & Tab with a 2 year old

Two years old is the age when your child will be happy to sit with you and discover what's in books and magazines. For "Let's sit and read" time every day, the variety of Tessy & Tab magazines will keep both you and your toddler occupied with fresh material.

The Six Skills for Early Literacy at 2 years old:

1

Print Motivation

Make reading time a cozy and special time. Tessy & Tab magazines are a fun small size and it’s exciting to have a small stack.

2

Print Awareness

Your child wants to see that you love reading too. Make sure she sees that you receive fun magazines in the mail also.

3

Vocabulary

Point to familiar objects in the Tessy & Tab stories and name them. “Look, there’s a guitar. Tab has a guitar!”

4

Narrative Skills

Rather than read the words, ask your child what is happening on each page. Point to familiar objects and embellish the descriptions.

5

Letter Knowledge

On the featured letter page, talk about the shape of the letter and trace it with your finger. Point out that there is a big letter and a little letter.

6

Phonological Awareness

On the featured letter page, use extra emphasis on the sound the featured letter makes in each of the words.
