How to use Tessy & Tab with a 3 year old

When your child is three years old, he will understand the concept of mail. The arrival of his very own Tessy & Tab magazine twice a month is an exciting moment. Share the excitement: show your child the magazines that come for grown-ups too.

The Six Skills for Early Literacy at 3 years old:

1

Print Motivation

Read with your child only when she shows interest. The arrival of Tessy & Tab in the mail is a natural time to sit down and have fun.

2

Print Awareness

Your child responds to bright, familiar pictures. Return to the stories that your child recognizes and that seem to captivate him.

3

Vocabulary

Make a game by asking your child to point to things on the pages of Tessy & Tab. “Where’s Tab’s skateboard?” Use lots of praise.

4

Narrative Skills

Be a good listener. Your child can “read” Tessy & Tab to you because the situations and pictures are familiar.

5

Letter Knowledge

The first letters your child will recognize are those in her name. Review the magazine label, and the names of Tessy and Tab.

6

Phonological Awareness

Talk about the sound the featured letter makes and emphasize it when repeating the featured words – “buh-buh-ball."
