How to use Tessy & Tab with a 4 year old

At four years old, your child will begin to feel pride in her early reading skills. As she gains confidence in telling the stories and recognizing letters, she may want to bring her Tessy & Tab magazines everywhere. Encourage that behavior.

The Six Skills of Early Literacy at 4 years old:

1

Print Motivation

Encourage your child’s enthusiasm by taking Tessy & Tab in the car, to visit friends and to the doctor’s office.

2

Print Awareness

In the magazines, show your child the words on signs and food packages. This print has meaning. Find words in your home.

3

Vocabulary

Discuss deeper descriptions of the scenes your child sees in Tessy & Tab stories. Our illustrations are designed for this purpose.

4

Narrative Skills

Help your child learn about story rhythm by reviewing the parts of the story. “What happened at the beginning? …the middle?  …the end?”

5

Letter Knowledge

Use magnetic letters on the refrigerator to recreate the words from the featured letter page in Tessy & Tab.

6

Phonological Awareness

Find words that look and sound the same. We try to put some repetition and rhyme into every Tessy & Tab magazine.
