The Tessy & Tab Reading Club

Parenting Magazine
Ages + Stages for 3-5 year olds: “Get’em reading!”
February 2008
"Kids love getting mail. You love having a smart kid. Subscribe to The Tessy & Tab Reading Club and you’ll both get what you want. Each twice-monthly, ad-free “magazine” tells a story about Tessy, a duck, and Tab, a kangaroo, and includes activities to promote early reading. Your first issue comes with a parents’ guide on how best to use the magazines at each age (2 to 6)."

My kiddos love Tessy and Tab, and the stories told in the mini-magazines. They love to get their magazine in the mail twice a month, and I will often find them curled up on the couch reading them.

Tessy and Tab is another company that teaches kids to love words early. It's more than just a magazine, it's a fun reading club that teaches literacy skills in a fun way. Bunny likes that mail arrives for her about every two weeks, and I like that there is a parent guide that comes in advance of its arrival via email. Read More...

I like that the Tessy & Tab illustrations tell the story as much as the words do. I also appreciate that the pictures are detailed and current (if you look carefully you'll notice that the computer looks like a Mac, or that the charity addressed on an envelope is a real one: CARE).

Your child will equally enjoy thumbing through them with you or on his own. The magazines are small and printed on heavy stock paper so they’ll fit easily in your purse or bag for reading opportunities in the car or while waiting at the doctor’s office.

Laura Williams' Musing

My 5 year old immediately started picking up and was "reading" the story. Sure she wasn't reading the words as they were written, but she was telling about it as if she was... that leads into her fully reading.

The magazine is ad-free and in picture book format; it is not the typical magazine that you find on newsstands.

“Tati gets excited when she sees her preschool magazine in the mail pile waiting for her. More than that, she loves when the Tessy & Tab adventures are stories that she can completely relate to, at that moment, in her life. She lights up and gets so excited to be able to connect with Tessy & Tab.”

“…The Tessy & Tab Reading Club has really thought this out, and has introduced a reading club especially for 2-6 year olds. This reading program was developed to support the Six Skills for Early Literacy endorsed by the US Department of Education, and as a parent, I think they really have hit the mark on how to introduce reading!”
Mommies with Style

“The stories are simple, the words big. The pictures are colorful and it's easy for the kids to "read" the story via the pictures if they can't get the words. This is a great grandparent gift.”

I think the money manager kit is a great way to teach kids about money because it lets children act like adults.

What really caught my eye was the Preschool Money Manager Toolkit they included. It's just what it says: a kit to help teach young children about managing money and I was highly impressed.

"Johnston's partners wouldn't let her give up, even though they were all working other jobs. Illustrator Rosie Welch, and Johnston's sisters, Jean MacDonald and Peggy MacDonald, had all worked with Johnston on her previous venture, PrintPaks Inc. All of them felt that the advertising-free magazine they had created for preschool children was too good to abandon."
